The highly-anticipated James Halliday Wine Companion 2021 results are in and we're excited to share our achievements with you. It is always an exciting time of year and Trentham Estate once again received a string of high scores for multiple wines - seven of our wines scored 92 points or higher!

94 Points

2018 Reserve Coonawarra Cabernet Sauvignon

Another source of fruit from farther afield. This is a very good cabernet, exhibiting none of the green astringency and cooked fruit too often a postage stamp. The flow of blackcurrant, mint and bitter chocolate is transparent, clad by refined gentle sage-brushed-tannins and impeccably appointed oak. Highly refined. Will age. However the smooth tannin management facilitates imminent enjoyment.

93 Points

2018 Reserve Tumbarumba Chardonnay

Reaching further afield to a bona fide cool region, the culture of clarity of fruit and sensitive winemaking is manifest in this streamlined, mineral clad expression. The stone fruit accents are all there, but so is nicely applied quality oak and a vitality that is sub-alpine, cool and the accelerator of good length and persistence.

93 Points (+ TOP 100 in 2019)

2018 The Family Nero d’Avola

Finds the point of balance between ample varietal character and medium-bodied presentation. The result is delicious dark berry flavours in a cool fruit flavour spectrum, plus fine, soft tannins. Perfect for an Italian menu.

93 Points

2019 Estate Grown Pinot Gris

This estate is such a high performer. Nashi pear, tarte tartin and a gentle waft of cinnamon spice. Real succulence and vinosity, here. Long. Great pulse. This is exceptional gris no matter where it comes from. The concentration is a point. Fore, middle and aft.

92 Points

2016 Reserve Heathcote Shiraz

Offers a generous serve of plum, ripe blackberry and elements of spice, probably ex the well handled oak. The soft, but persistent, tannins are yet another dab of paint used to complete the picture of quality Heathcote fruit.

92 Points

2019 The Family Vermentino

Wow. Trentham Estate has managed to grown and vinify this wine with a totally unexpected intensity of flavour, especially the salty lemony twang on the finish and aftertaste. Take anything from the sea and this wine will stare it down.

92 Points

2018 Estate Grown Chardonnay

A light yellow with green glints around the edges. Again, punching well above origin and price-point, this mid-weighted Chardonnay shuffles a deck of minerally sophistication with a hand of forward stone fruit scents, toasted nuts and the hallmarks of a wine from a far cooler zone.

We would like to thank our whole team for their continuous efforts – we only achieve results like this because of their dedication and hard work.
