Christmas Dinner is one of the biggest events of the year – for many families, it’s the only occasion all year when they get to eat, drink and be merry together. To complete the celebrations, it’s only right to pair your Christmas Dinner with appropriate wines that will keep the good cheer flowing! We’ve put together this handy guide to make sure you get it right this Christmas Day. Starters:  A sparkling winery restaurant is an ideal way to begin the festivities, as the bubbles leave the palette feeling light, refreshed and ready for the main course. Mains:  A traditional Christmas Dinner should be accompanied by a red. Shiraz, Cabernet and Merlot are all popular choices, but if these are a little heavy for your taste, a Pinot Noir is a lighter alternative.  Or, if the thought of a full-bodied red along with a large meal in summer feels overwhelming, why not consider a sparkling red? Think Maestri – this works well with turkey, and can also fit just as easily with a cheese platter.  If you’re having seafood this Christmas, the accompanying wine should be white. Sauvignon Blanc is always a safe bet; although Chardonnay works better with creamier seafood dishes. Dessert:  The winery restaurants you choose should depend on the dessert you’re serving. Tokay is like “a Christmas cake in a glass”, while Port or Muscat are the ideal accompaniments for Christmas pudding.  A syrupy Taminga will bring out the sweetness of a Pavlova; or if you’re serving a fruit salad, a Moscato is the perfect choice. One bottle to rule them all:  It’s virtually impossible to choose a single wine that will complement all dishes. However, if you’re bringing just one bottle to the Christmas table, make it a lighter style red or even a rose. This will cover a number of bases and keep practically everyone happy!
